The Forgotten Side of the School

Nothing in this photograph is unusual. That is the whole problem with it. The floor was waxed this week. The art on the wall is this year's art. The trophies are for teams that still have practice on Tuesdays. Somebody maintains this hallway, every single day, on purpose — and it is not you, and you have never once seen who. You were in this building five days a week for six years. You could draw the cafeteria from memory. You know which stairwell smelled like paint. And you have never walked down this hall, even though you always knew it was here, the way you know there is a basement in a house you have only been inside once. That is the part that will not sit flat: you cannot have known about a corridor you never entered, and you did. You knew about it before you turned the corner. Also: you can hear the rest of the school through the block wall, and it sounds like the correct time of day. Bells, chairs, a gym whistle. In six years of standing in halls, a hall was never empty for more than forty seconds. This one has been empty the entire time you have been looking at it.
