The Airport You Keep Missing

There is no reason this should feel wrong. The carpet is the right carpet. The chairs are the right chairs. The monitor shows real cities with real flight numbers, and the light through the windows is the flat white of a real afternoon. You have been in this exact gate area before, or one so close to it that the difference does not matter. The problem is that you have been here before. Not at this airport. Here. This gate. You remember the shape of the empty chairs and the way the corridor to the left seems to end in a brighter place than it should. You remember the book on the small table, even though you have never opened it. And you remember running. You are not running now. Nobody is. The terminal is not abandoned — it is simply between crowds, the way terminals always are at certain hours. But your body knows the feeling of being late here. Your chest remembers the panic of seeing the gate change after you had already walked twenty minutes to reach it. Your legs remember corridors that kept going after the map said they should stop. You have missed this flight before, many times, and you have never once boarded a plane in this building.
