A weekday, in a house you have the key to
The Impossible Room
There is nothing to point at. Beige carpet, floral border, sheer curtains, a switch, a stack of games. You could find nine hundred photographs like this one. That is exactly why it is worth standing here a minute longer. This is your house. The carpet is your carpet — you know the give of it. The border is the one that was up until they redid the kitchen. Your hand found that switch in the dark before you were tall enough to reach it without jumping. And there is no room here. Walk the outside of the house and count: garage, kitchen, back step, yard. There is no volume of air in that building for this room to occupy. It does not overlap anything. It is simply extra, and it is finished — baseboard mitered, border cut to the corner, carpet stretched to the tack strip. Somebody was paid to complete a room that does not fit inside the house. The games are yours, from the hall closet, in the order they were always stacked. So somebody carried them in here, past you, and put them down, and neither of you ever said anything about it.
