Down here it is always the same amount of afternoon, and that is exactly why you were allowed to disappear into it. The TV is warm to the back of your hand, the ceiling creaks when somebody crosses the kitchen above you, and the cold comes up through the floor in one specific corner. Whoever was playing before you paused the game and set the controller down straight, which is not how kids set controllers down. You spent whole summers underneath your family like this and nobody ever came down to check.
