Grandparents’ Living Room
You were brought here on a day that was not a holiday, which is how you knew it mattered. The clock in the hall is louder than the voices in the kitchen, and the voices in the kitchen stop whenever you stop moving. Nothing in this room has been moved since the last time you sat in it — not the coasters, not the throw pillow with the flattened corner, not the cup. You were always told to sit still in here, and the room has kept its side of that bargain for longer than you have been alive.
