Library Children’s Corner

This is where you were left when the errands were going to take longer than anybody wanted to admit. Cold air off the vent, carpet worn soft in a track from the door to the shelf, nobody telling you to hurry up or keep your voice down as long as you stayed in the corner. Every book in reach is one you have read, including the ones you are certain you never owned, and you can find the covers with your hands. You were happy here in a way you have not been able to reproduce since, and you were also, quietly, watching the door.
