Four minutes after the last bell
School Hallway Lockers
The building doubles in size the second everyone leaves it, and you learned that the year you were the last kid picked up. Four minutes after the bell the floor is still tacky in the spots where somebody ran, the water in the fountain is still moving, and the paper on the walls is still curling in the heat from the vents. One locker down the row is not quite latched, the way one never was, and you know without checking which one it is. Somewhere ahead of you a door closes on a spring the way that particular door closed.
